Nicer Portals

by Roundaround

Portals get a handful of small changes from Nicer Portals, a Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt utility mod for 1.18.2 – 26.3 with several options that can be toggled.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.18.2 – 26.3

What it does

Some changes apply on the client alone. When a portal is broken, the whole portal emits a single break sound instead of one sound per block, which the dedupeBreakSound option controls. Other changes live on the server side, and a single-player world counts as both. Zombified piglins can no longer spawn from portals in the overworld when preventPortalSpawns is enabled, and crying obsidian can stand in for regular obsidian when a portal is built if cryingObsidian is set to true.

Portal construction is loosened by the anyShape option, which lets a portal take any enclosed shape. Because larger portals cost more to run, the size is capped according to the number of real portal blocks, and the limit is set in the config file. enforceMinimum keeps the smallest portal at 1x2 so a player can walk through it, and portalFrameTag switches frame checks to the nicerportals:portal frame tag. Settings live in nicerportals.toml, with one copy in the config folder and another inside each world save.

Nicer Portals needs Fabric API, which must be installed on every loader it runs on. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the source code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Single break sound

A portal makes one break sound when it is destroyed, not one per block.

  2. Any portal shape

Portals can be built as any enclosed frame shape, with a size cap based on portal block count.

  3. Crying obsidian frames

Crying obsidian is accepted in place of regular obsidian when constructing a portal.

  4. No overworld piglin spawns

Zombified piglins do not spawn from portals in the overworld.

  5. Portal frame tag

Frame validation can read the nicerportals:portal frame tag instead of a fixed block list.
