Name Tag Upgrade
by Fuzs
Name Tag Upgrade changes how name tags work on mobs, letting players rename a mob directly from a dedicated screen in the hotbar without anvil experience costs.
What it does
The mod turns the name tag into a more useful item. A dedicated edit screen opens when a player uses a tag, so a name can be changed quickly and without an anvil. Players can apply formatting codes to a name, giving it colors, bold lettering, italics or other styling, and each time a tag is applied a sound plays.
Tags are used up less often. A tag with an identical name is not consumed, shears remove a custom name from a mob and return a matching tag, and a named mob drops its name tag on death so the name survives. Renaming a mob that already has a name gives back the previous tag instead of deleting it. Configuration can be done in-game through Mod Menu or by editing the config file by hand.
A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. It is published for Fabric and NeoForge, for 1.21.1, 1.21.11, 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3, and the code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. It requires Fabric API, Forge Config API Port and Puzzles Lib.

How it compares
Name Tag (Craft & Drops) is open source under the MIT License and loads on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.21 – 26.3, with the server required and the client optional. Reliable Name Tags is open source under the Apache License 2.0 and runs on Fabric and NeoForge for 1.21.1 – 26.3, with the client and server both needed. Name Tag Upgrade covers the same Fabric and NeoForge side with the client and server both needed, so the two differ mainly in license and version coverage.
