Monsters Level Up

by Sombrius

Monsters Level Up makes hostile mobs grow stronger as a player advances through the game, adding gear, abilities and new mini-boss variants to the monsters of the world.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.19.2 – 1.20.6

What it does

Mobs gain new equipment, abilities and behaviors as the player's progress advances. Main story milestones such as obtaining iron or diamond armor, enchanting, entering the Nether and defeating the Ender Dragon make monsters harder to kill. Some mobs spawn with potion effects and extra gear, and certain mobs can use shields, flint and steel, or fire charges.

The mod changes existing monsters rather than replacing them. Skeletons switch between melee and ranged attacks, undead mobs call reinforcements when struck, and spiders set targets and place cobwebs. Mini-bosses appear in the world, including Skeleton Commanders, Zombie Juggernauts and Wither Skeleton Horsemen, and killing them yields materials for crafting gear with special abilities.

Installation needs Geckolib, which must be present on both the client and the server. Monsters Level Up runs on Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.19.2 – 1.20.6 and the latest Forge file at 1.4 for 1.20.1. The mod is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Progress-based mob scaling

Monsters become tougher as the player reaches milestones in the main story, so difficulty follows the progression.

  2. Mini-boss variants

Skeleton Commanders, Zombie Juggernauts and Spider Mothers spawn in the world, with their own attacks and buffs.

  3. Craftable boss rewards

Materials dropped by mini-bosses can be crafted into gear with special abilities.

  4. Ocean and Nether mob changes

Zombie Dolphins spawn in oceans, and Wither Skeleton Horses appear in Soul Sand Valley, where they can be tamed with Phantom Membranes.
