Merchant Markers

by Grend

With Merchant Markers installed, a marker appears above each villager that has a profession, so traders are easier to spot from a distance.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 4.01.16.5 – 1.21.4

What it does

Each marker shows an icon chosen by the profession of the villager below it. The default icons are hand-drawn for each profession, and a configuration setting can switch the marker to an item icon tied to the profession, such as an iron chestplate for armorers, or to the texture of the job block. A fourth option shows one generic merchant icon for every villager with a profession. Modded professions are supported, and resource packs can supply icons for them.

The configuration file controls whether markers show through walls, whether an arrow sits under each marker, and the maximum distance at which markers are visible. A profession blacklist holds none and nitwit by default, so only villagers with trades are marked. A small overlay icon can be set to a backpack, an emerald, a coin stack, a bag, or nothing, and it appears at the bottom right of each marker. The mod also works with the Xaero minimap, FTB Chunks and one other supported map, replacing the standard villager head icons on those maps.

Merchant Markers requires Fabric API and Iceberg. It runs on the client alone, so players install it and servers do not need it. It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.16.5 – 1.21.4, and the license is Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 4.0, which is not open source. The source code and issue tracker are publicly linked.

Key features

  1. Profession icons

Each profession gets its own hand-drawn icon above the villager, and resource packs can replace them.

  2. Item-based markers

Markers can show an item tied to the profession, such as an iron chestplate for armorers, and these items can be reconfigured.

  3. Job block textures

Markers can show the texture of the job block a profession uses, with support for modded professions.

  4. Wall and distance settings

Markers can show through walls, carry an arrow below, and stay visible only within a chosen distance.

  5. Profession blacklist

A configurable list skips professions such as nitwit, so villagers without trades get no marker.

  6. Map integration

Icons replace villager heads on the Xaero minimap, FTB Chunks and one other supported map.
