Iron Signs
by pinter.gabor
Iron Signs lets players craft signs from iron plates, giving builders a sturdy, high contrast sign that stands out from vanilla wooden signs.
What it does
Iron Signs adds signs made from iron plates rather than wood. Each sign takes a stack of 64 plain gray plates, which are inexpensive to obtain, and the crafting recipes follow the same pattern as vanilla wooden signs, so players already know how to make them. The painted iron signs are built to hold up better than wooden ones, and they can carry vivid colors and text formatting, which makes them readable at a distance.
The mod suits decorators, adventure maps and multiplayer servers, where signs are used to convey information between players. Sign text supports coloring and formatting codes. Cloth Config API and Fabric API are required, and Mod Menu is optional for opening its configuration screen. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. Files are published for Fabric and NeoForge across 21 release versions, 1.20.2 – 26.2, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Use cases
Labeling shared builds
Painted iron signs mark routes, rooms and storage so friends on a server can find things quickly.
Adventure maps
Durable signs suit map makers who want clear, readable messages in their worlds.
Who it’s for: Builders and decorators who want signs that differ from wooden ones, and server owners who need readable signage for players.
How it compares
Big Sign Writer is client-side only, uses the Mozilla Public License 2.0, is open source and covers 1.20 – 26.3 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, so servers do not need it. Live Sign is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and covers 1.21.1 – 26.1.2 on Fabric and NeoForge. Iron Signs needs both sides to run, so it fits servers that want the same sign on every client.

What the author says
Iron Signs themselves are not much better than Vanilla wooden signs. They are inexpensive, and stack up to 64, but they are just dull gray, slightly rusted pieces of iron plates. Standard MIT license. Feel free to learn from it and incorporate it in your own projects. Some parts of the code are based on the source…
