Improved Maps
by CraftyCorvid
Improved Maps extends the map and atlas items of Minecraft with a set of server-side features, plus optional client-side tooltips and biome colours.
What it does
Maps and atlases gain a few behaviours. Empty maps placed in an atlas can be filled automatically, new maps can be created when a player explores past the edge of the current one, and an atlas can be copied in full. An atlas holds up to 512 filled maps, with the number of empty maps configurable, and map walls can be placed to display them. Combining a bundle with a map is supported as well.
Map information tooltips show the scale and the centre coordinates of a map. Biome map colours record the biome each map pixel came from and tint grass and leaves to match, and only players who have the mod installed see that difference, while vanilla clients keep seeing vanilla maps and atlases. Vanilla clients work thanks to Polymer, which is a required dependency alongside Fabric API. The mod runs on Fabric only, for 1.21.5 – 26.3 across 10 release versions, and is released under the MIT License as open source.
Key features
Automatic map filling
Empty maps are filled automatically in an atlas, and new maps are created as a player explores past the edge of the current one.
Atlas copying and capacity
An entire atlas can be copied, and one atlas holds up to 512 filled maps with a configurable number of empty maps.
Map information tooltips
Tooltips show the scale and the centre coordinates of a map, so the position of a map is readable without leaving the inventory.
Biome map colours
The biome of each map pixel is recorded, so grass and leaves on the map take the tint of their biome.
