Vanilla Tweaks Data Fixer

by CraftyCorvid

Vanilla Tweaks Data Fixer converts world data that Vanilla Tweaks packs stored in the NBT format of 1.20.4 and older into the component format used from 1.20.5 on.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.6 – 1.21

What it does

The mod targets worlds that used a Vanilla Tweaks data pack such as Armored Elytra before updating. Its conversion step rewrites that old NBT data so the items keep working on the newer component format. Only the server needs the mod, so players join without installing anything.

Upgrading a world is a manual, one-time process. Back up the world folder first, since a failed conversion can damage the save. Install the Fabric build for 1.20.6 or 1.21, start the server with the forceUpgrade option, and shut it down once the upgrade finishes. On a single-player client, select the save, click Edit and then Optimize World. The mod is published for Fabric only, in files for 1.20.6 and 1.21, and it is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Item data rewrite

Rewrites item data from the older NBT layout into the component layout that replaced it.

  2. Armored Elytra data

Targets the data written by the Vanilla Tweaks Armored Elytra pack, which older worlds may still contain.

  3. Startup conversion

A startup option lets the server run the conversion on the world before it begins accepting players.

  4. Single-player world upgrade

Single-player players can run the same upgrade from the world list through the Optimize World button.

Use cases

Updating an old survival world

A world built with the Armored Elytra pack can be carried over to a newer version with its items intact.

Moving a server to a newer version

Server owners can run the conversion once during the move, then shut the server down and start it normally.

Who it’s for: Server owners and single-player players who keep worlds that were created with Vanilla Tweaks data packs before the component format and want to carry them forward.

Questions

Does Vanilla Tweaks Data Fixer work with Quilt?

No. The mod is published for Fabric only, so Quilt is not covered by its files.

Does the server need the mod before upgrading?

Yes. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.

Why should the world be backed up first?

The author warns that a failed conversion can lose the whole world, so a copy of the save folder should exist before the upgrade starts.
