Gridless

Gridless lets players place items anywhere in a container screen, removing the fixed 9x3 slot grid from chests and other storage.
What it does
Gridless removes the restrictive grid from player inventories, chests, ender chests, barrels, shulker boxes and creative screens. Items can be dropped at any pixel position, and each item's coordinates are saved in NBT data, so the inventory layout is kept when the world reloads. The mod runs on Fabric for 1.20.1 and has to be installed on both the client and the server, so every player and the server need it.
The mod is released under the MIT License and is open source, with its source code and issue tracker public. Latest build 1.2.0 for 1.20.1 came out on 2026-07-02, after the first release on 2026-06-29. A ModMenu config screen lets players switch the gridless mode on or off separately for each storage type.

Pressing R merges partial stacks and arranges items into neat rows.
Drag paint
Holding the left or right mouse button and dragging places items across several spots at once.
Shift-click to chest
Shift-clicking items in the gridless area sends them straight to an open chest or the hotbar.
