Friendly Fire

by Darkhax

Friendly Fire stops players from accidentally hurting their pets and other vulnerable mobs during combat and feeding.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient and serverGNU Lesser General Public License v2.1 onlyOpen source1.7.10 – 26.3

What it does

Pets become immune to attacks from their owners, and to damage from other pets that share the same owner. Baby animals are immune to attacks from every source. A player who needs to kill a protected mob can sneak while attacking to bypass the protection. Configuration options change or disable which mob types are protected.

The mod targets a common problem: a pet stepping into the line of fire, or a misclick while feeding it, can cost a companion. Friendly Fire is meant to keep pets useful on adventures without giving them extra combat strength. Modded pets are protected when their developer has defined them as ownable pets in code.

Friendly Fire requires Bookshelf, Fabric API and Prickle. It is a client and server mod, so the server and every player need it. Builds cover 1.7.10 – 26.3 for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the code is under the GNU Lesser General Public License v2.1 only.

Key features

  1. Owner-safe pets

Pets cannot be damaged by their owner or by pets belonging to the same owner.

  2. Baby animal protection

Baby animals are immune to attacks from all sources.

  3. Sneak to override

Crouching while attacking lets a player hit a protected mob on purpose.

  4. Datapack entity tags

Entity tags let datapacks add mobs to the protection list or exempt items from it.

Questions

Does Friendly Fire need Fabric API on every loader?

Fabric API is listed as a required dependency alongside Bookshelf and Prickle, so it must be installed with the mod.

Can a server give villagers protection from attacks?

Yes. A datapack entity tag can list villagers and wandering villagers as protected mobs.

Do modded pets get protection automatically?

Only when their developer has marked the entity as ownable in code; otherwise the mod leaves it unprotected.
