Custom Tooltip API
by Stalemated
With Custom Tooltip API installed, players can add lore, live data and animated text to item tooltips without writing code.
What it does
The mod is a client-side library and developer API for item tooltips. Players set tooltip text in-game or through JSON files, and the mod can show dynamic real-time values, animated gradients and custom backgrounds on each item. Basic use needs no coding, while the developer API lets other mods inject tooltips from code.
Installation requires S-Lib and YACL on every loader. On Fabric, Fabric API is required as well. Mod Menu is optional and adds a settings entry for the mod. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, covering 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, and the code is released under the MIT License.
Key features
Item targeting
Tooltips can target a single item ID, an item tag, a whole mod namespace, a regex pattern or every item at once.
Multi-line lore
A tooltip can hold several lines, so full paragraphs of lore or skill descriptions fit on one item.
Animated text effects
Text can cycle through a rainbow, flow between two colors in a slide gradient, or pulse between two colors in a breathing gradient.
Static gradients and solid text
Fixed gradients and plain solid colors are available for tooltip text that does not animate.
Aligned tooltip icons
Icons from external resource packs are aligned to the start of each line, so their position stays consistent.

Use cases
Modpack item descriptions
A pack author can write lore and stat lines for items from other mods without touching their code.
Scripted tooltip data
Developers can call the API to show values that change during play, such as a counter or a status.
Who it’s for: Players who want custom lore and text effects on items, and developers who need a shared way to add tooltips to other mods.
How it compares
Simply Tooltips works on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 under a custom license, so it is not open source. LibTooltips covers Forge and NeoForge for 1.20.1 – 26.3 and is open source under the MIT License. Tooltip Overhaul targets 1.20 – 1.21.5 on all three loaders and is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only.
