CursorCentered Fix

by LitnhJacuzzi

Opening a container GUI can leave the cursor away from the screen center, and CursorCentered Fix recenters it on each open so items can be moved quickly.

What it does

The mod corrects the cursor position when a container or other GUI opens. In vanilla play the pointer sometimes does not appear at the center of the window, which slows fast transfers from a chest or inventory. The mod places the cursor at the center whenever such a screen opens, and it works in Fabric, Forge and NeoForge builds.

Client-side only: the mod runs on the player's side and servers do not need it. Its files cover 1.14 – 26.2 across 47 release versions, with the latest builds at 1.4.1 for 26.2 on Fabric and NeoForge and for 1.20.4 on Forge. The project will not be updated above 26.2, because vanilla moved to the SDL backend after 26.3 and fixed the centering problem.

The source code and issue tracker are public. The mod is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only. On Wayland, centering can be configured through an external tool and a scaling value, as the author describes in the project notes.

Key features

  1. Cursor recentering on GUI open

The cursor is moved to the center of the window when a container or other GUI screen opens.

  2. Wayland backend option

A JVM argument selects an external tool to move the cursor on Wayland, based on the compositor in use.

  3. Movement scaling value

An optional scale factor corrects the cursor position on Wayland when desktop sensitivity or UI scale differs from default.

  4. Calibration method

The author describes how to measure the scale value by comparing the requested and actual cursor positions on screen.

Use cases

Rapid item transfers

Players who move items often between a chest and the inventory can start each transfer from a predictable cursor position.

Wayland desktop sessions

Players on Wayland desktop sessions can tune the cursor position with the external tool and scale value the author describes.

Who it’s for: Players who notice the cursor appearing off-center when a GUI opens, most often on Wayland desktops or with non-default mouse settings.

Questions

Does CursorCentered Fix need to be installed on the server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing. Servers can run without it.

Which loaders and versions does CursorCentered Fix support?

It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.14 – 26.2. The latest Fabric and NeoForge files are 1.4.1 for 26.2, and the latest Forge file is 1.4.1 for 1.20.4.

Will the mod be updated for versions after 26.2?

The author states that it will not be updated above 26.2, because vanilla fixed the centering issue in the SDL backend after 26.3.

What the author says

This mod fixes the cursor centering issue that occasionally happens when opening a GUI, e.g. open a container GUI but the cursor doesn't appear from the center which could be dangerous when you need to pull something from a chest or inventory rapidly. Vanilla has shipped to SDL backend after 26.3 which completely…
