Wayland Cursor Fix

by carolinaisslaying

Wayland Cursor Fix stops the mouse cursor from staying visible after modded GUIs close on Wayland desktops.

What it does

On Wayland, the cursor can remain on screen after certain modded screens such as those from Ad Astra and Chipped are closed, and it can also appear centred when GUIs open. The mod corrects this behaviour so the cursor hides again once a screen is dismissed and returns to normal gameplay. It is a client-side change, so only the player's client needs it and a server can run without it.

The mod is published for NeoForge and Forge, with a file for 1.20.1 and one for 1.21.1. Its latest NeoForge build is 1.1.0+mc1.21.1 and its latest Forge build is 1.0.0+mc1.20.1. The code is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only, with public source code and an issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Cursor hides after GUI closes

The cursor no longer stays visible on screen once a modded GUI has been closed under Wayland.

  2. Fix for modded screens

Screens from mods such as Ad Astra and Chipped are covered by the correction, which the author reported as a reproducible case.

  3. Centred cursor on open

The issue where the cursor appeared centred when GUIs opened is addressed by the same change.

Use cases

Wayland desktop play

Players running Minecraft through a Wayland session, for example on GNOME, are the audience the fix was written for.

System GLFW setups

Players who point their launcher at a system install of GLFW, as the author did with Prism Launcher, can use the mod in the same setup.

Who it’s for: Players on Linux who run Minecraft through a Wayland session and use NeoForge or Forge. Players on other platforms have no cursor issue this mod addresses.

Questions

Does Wayland Cursor Fix need to be on the server?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Which loaders and versions does Wayland Cursor Fix support?

Files are published for NeoForge and Forge, covering 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. The latest NeoForge file is for 1.21.1 and the latest Forge file is for 1.20.1.

Does the mod change the cursor on every system?

It targets the Wayland cursor problem. The author notes that the issue appears under Wayland, such as on Arch Linux with GNOME 50.

What the author says

When installed, you should not see this occur, and everything should function exactly as intended. This mod fixes the latter issue that arises, as stated.
