Custom Player Animations

by RazorPlay01

Custom Player Animations replaces and extends the default player animations of Minecraft, adding smoother movement for walking, climbing and swimming.

What it does

Custom Player Animations overhauls the vanilla player animations across three categories, aiming for motion that feels smooth and natural while keeping the core gameplay feel. Animations are stored as JSON files under assets/cpa/player_animations, and a resource pack can override or add to them, so a pack author can supply steampunk, medieval or sci-fi movement sets. Blockbench .bbmodel files are included to ease editing and creation, and resource pack reloads apply changes without restarting the game.

The mod gives other developers an interface for controlling animations, along with hooks for custom sets and management of body parts, plus compatibility patches for other mods. Animation speeds can be adjusted in an in-game config screen, so players can match the speeds to their resource packs and preferences. The mod is client-side only, and it needs Cloth Config API, Fabric API, Player Animation Library and playerAnimator, which all run on the client alongside it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 12 release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.3, under a Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license that is not open source.

Key features

  1. Replaced vanilla animations

Default player movements are replaced with new animations that cover walking as well as complex actions such as climbing and swimming.

  2. Resource pack overrides

Animation files placed in a resource pack override the defaults, so custom sets can be added without changing the mod.

  3. Blockbench support

Bundled .bbmodel files let animators create and edit new movement sets in Blockbench.

  4. Hot reload

Resource pack reloads apply animation changes immediately, so edits can be checked without restarting the game.

  5. Animation speed settings

An in-game config screen adjusts animation speeds to suit the player's resource packs and preferences.

  6. Developer interface

A documented interface lets other modders control animations, hook custom sets and manage body parts.

Questions

Does Custom Player Animations need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is listed as required, alongside Cloth Config API, Player Animation Library and playerAnimator, so all four must be installed.

Does the server need Custom Player Animations?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

How are custom animations added?

Animation JSON files are placed in a resource pack, where they override the default animations. Changes can be reloaded without restarting the game.
