Compacting
by celeste
Compacting, a Fabric client mod, merges repeated chat messages into a single line with a counter showing how many times the message arrived.
What it does
Instead of filling the chat with dozens of identical lines, the mod groups them into one message and shows a count of repetitions. Each line is judged by when it was last seen, rather than by scanning neighboring chat lines. Dividers sent across several chat messages, such as those used by some servers, are recognized and handled correctly.
The mod takes its approach from a well-known compacting feature in another client, and it sets itself apart by how it decides when lines match. When Mod Menu and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) are installed, a settings screen opens with options that control when a message gets compacted and an optional setting that removes blank chat lines. Fabric Language Kotlin is required. Mod Menu and YACL are optional. The mod is released under the zlib License and is open source, with public source code and an issue tracker. Builds cover 1.19.4 – 26.3, and the latest Fabric file for 26.3 is 1.1.1+26.2, dated 2026-06-16.
Key features
Time-based compacting
Repeated messages are merged according to when each was last seen, not by scanning neighboring chat lines.
Repeat counter
A compacted message shows a counter with the number of times the same line was received.
Multi-message dividers
Divider lines split across several chat messages are detected and compacted correctly.
Configurable behavior
With Mod Menu and YACL present, a settings screen controls when messages compact and whether blank lines are removed.

Use cases
Busy server chat
Players on servers that repeat automated announcements or dividers can keep the chat readable.
Long play sessions
Frequent system or status messages stop pushing useful lines out of view.
Who it’s for: Players who use the Fabric loader and want a shorter, more readable chat log, especially on servers that send repeated messages or divider lines.

What the author says
An intelligent compact chat mod for Fabric, inspired by the behavior of same feature from [Patcher]. Instead of having a few dozen separate chat messages consisting of the same message, this mod compacts them into one message with a counter showing the amount of times that the message was repeated.
