Collapsing Caves
by CCDelic
With Collapsing Caves, dirt, stone and other blocks can come down from a ceiling as a cave-in, triggered naturally underground below sea level.
What it does
Cave-ins start on their own in the Overworld below sea level, and they can only begin underground, where the sky cannot be seen. A warning lasts about three seconds, with the screen shaking and a deep rumble, and the mod gives players time to move to a safe position before blocks fall. Once the ceiling starts to give way, blocks fall in groups, hurt players and mobs, and leave dust that produces a sound where they land. The collapse is anchored at the block that was broken, and it can follow the player as it spreads.
Each block break carries a 1-in-512 chance of setting off a collapse, and no collapse can fire during the first 20 minutes after a player joins. A small buffer is added before a cave-in begins after it is triggered. Configuration options tune this logic so players are not griefed or burdened by frequent collapses. Installation covers the server and each player's game. It requires Fabric API and is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3.
Key features
Natural cave-ins
Cave-ins happen on their own while mining, with varying magnitudes that give the underground a disaster element.
Warning before collapse
Screen shake and a deep rumble give about three seconds of warning before blocks fall, so players can step away.
Block types
Stone, dirt and clay blocks have their own variants, and newer releases add sulfur and cinnabar for the game.
Configurable frequency
Options control how often cave-ins start, with rules that keep them from firing too often or too early after logging in.
