BetterHitSounds
by _Pheonix
BetterHitSounds replaces the default combat audio of Minecraft with layered hit sounds for shots, combo chains and important hits, and players can tune the volume and distance for each.
What it does
Hit sounds play when a player strikes a mob or another player, and the mod can attach different audio to base shots, combo extensions and important hits. Each category has its own sound range, so a combo chain can be heard differently from a single swing. Volume can fall off with distance, which keeps fights in the next room from sounding as loud as the ones in front of the player.
Custom sound packs are supported. Audio files in the OGG format can be loaded from the built-in presets, from a local folder, or from a path the player chooses. Changes to the imported assets and tuning values take effect at runtime, so players can adjust a sound without restarting the game session.
The mod requires Fabric API for its configuration and infrastructure, and Mod Menu is an optional dependency that adds an in-game settings screen. BetterHitSounds runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it and players join without installing anything. It is published for Fabric across 16 release versions, 1.21 – 26.2, and is open source under the MIT License.
Key features
Combo chain sounds
Consecutive hits in a combo can trigger their own sounds, so a chain of strikes is audibly distinct from single hits.
Distance-based volume
Hit sounds fade with the distance to the target, making nearby fights clearer than distant ones.
Custom sound packs
Players can load OGG files from presets, local folders or chosen paths and assign them to hit categories.
Runtime changes
Imported assets and tuning values update while the game runs, without a restart.
Separate hit categories
Base shots, combo extensions and important hits each use their own sound range and settings.
