Barrels 2012

by eerussianguy

With Barrels 2012, items and blocks from TerraFirmaCraft can be worn on the player's back, much as the Classic mod did in 2012.

What it does

The mod lets the player carry TerraFirmaCraft content on the back, recreating the wearable barrel setup of the earlier Classic release. Four kinds of content are covered: Large Vessels, Lamps, Powderkegs and Crucibles. Each one is worn through the Curios API slots rather than the normal inventory grid.

Barrels 2012 requires Curios API and TerraFirmaCraft, and both must be installed alongside it. The mod runs on the client and on the server, so the server and every player need it. Files are published for Forge and NeoForge, with 2.1 for 1.20.1 and 3.0.0 for 1.21.1 as the latest builds. The code is open source under the MIT License, and source code and an issue tracker are public.

The first release came out on 2023-12-03 and the most recent update on 2025-11-23. Game versions with files are 1.18.2, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.

Key features

  1. Large Vessels on the back

Large vessels from TerraFirmaCraft can be carried on the player's back as a wearable item.

  2. Lamps with dynamic light

Worn lamps emit light that changes with the item's state, so the player's surroundings brighten while carried.

  3. Powderkegs

Powderkegs can be worn as well. Players should keep them away from fire, since a spark can set them off.

  4. Crucibles on the back

Crucibles can be strapped to the back, keeping a working vessel within reach while moving around.

Use cases

Carrying tools while traveling

A player on a long trip can keep vessels and lamps on the back and free both hands for other work.

Recreating Classic-era setups

Players who remember the 2012 Classic mod can rebuild the same wearable layout on a modern TerraFirmaCraft world.

Who it’s for: Players who run TerraFirmaCraft on Forge or NeoForge and want its vessels, lamps and kegs worn on the back. Server owners who want the same setup for their group also fit, since both sides need the mod.

How it compares

Full comparison

FirmaSupplementaries is a Forge and NeoForge mod for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 that is also client and server and open source under the MIT License, so it covers a similar space with a wider set of decorations. Head Items is a Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt mod for 1.17 – 1.21.11 that is server required and client optional, and it is not open source, so it places items on the head rather than the back.
