Balanced Shield

by Happy1speed

Balanced Shield makes a shield lose tolerance with every hit it blocks, so heavy weapons and certain attacks can break it for a while.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1

What it does

Each blocked hit reduces the shield's tolerance, and the value depends on the type of attack. Sword users and some weapons reduce a blocking player's tolerance more than others, so a shield can be weakened quickly in player-versus-player fights. Once tolerance reaches 0%, the shield is disabled and cannot block until it recharges. A non-player melee mob needs about three sword hits to disable a shield, arrows need two, and non-entity explosions disable it outright. Firework rocket explosions and axes disable a shield in a single hit.

A shield recharges after roughly ten seconds without a blocked hit. A small orange message above the hotbar shows how much tolerance remains, though the indicator is still a work in progress and the author plans a nicer interface later. The mod pairs with Guarding for shield experience, works with Bumblezone shields out of the box, and any other shield needs the balanced shield tag to get the same effects. The author states that compatibility with mods that edit how shields work is not assured.

Key features

  1. Tolerance per hit

Every blocked hit lowers the shield's tolerance, and the reduction varies with the weapon or attack type.

  2. Disabling shields

A shield at 0% tolerance is disabled, and different attacks reach that point after different numbers of hits.

  3. Timed recharge

A shield regains tolerance after about ten seconds with no blocked hit.

  4. Hotbar tolerance message

A small orange message above the hotbar shows the remaining tolerance while a shield is being used.

  5. Tagged custom shields

Shields from other mods can receive the same effects by adding them to the balanced shield tag.

How it compares

Full comparison

ShieldIndicator is a Fabric client-side only mod for 1.20.1 under the MIT License, so it adds shield display without changing how shields behave on a server. Guarding is a Fabric client and server mod for 1.18.2 – 1.21.1 under the CC0 1.0 Universal license and adds shield experience rather than limiting tolerance. Better Shields is a Fabric client and server mod for 1.18.1 – 1.19.4 and is not open source.

What the author says

Balanced shield adds a "shield tolerance" value that reduces whenever your shield is hit. Sword users now have some weight in pvp as battering a shield with weapons will now reduce the blocking player's shield tolerance. Once the shield tolerance reaches 0%, the shield is disabled for a while.
