World Host

by TakiSpl

With World Host, a singleplayer world can be opened to friends without running a dedicated server or configuring port forwarding on the router.

What it does

Friends join through the mod's friends system once they have World Host installed. When a friend asks to connect, the friend's client requests an address from the mod's server, which relays the connection details between the two clients. The mod tries UPnP first, opening a temporary port forward in the host's router, and falls back to a proxy address if the router refuses. The mod runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the latest files target 1.21.5, 1.20.1 and 1.20.4.

The host can also skip the friends system. The command /worldhost ip returns an address for use with a tunneling tool, and /worldhost tempip returns a temporary server address that stays valid for at least 60 seconds, for clients who connect within that window. Not using the friends system can raise ping, and the friends system can be turned off in the mod settings for hosts who never plan to use it. Files cover 1.16.1 – 1.21.5, and snapshot builds are published as well. The mod is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Friends system hosting

Friends with the mod installed join a singleplayer world directly, with no server setup on the host side.

  2. UPnP and proxy connections

The connection uses a router port forward when UPnP succeeds, and a proxy address when it does not.

  3. Temporary server address

The command /worldhost tempip gives a short-lived address for clients who connect within 60 seconds.

  4. Tunneling address command

The command /worldhost ip returns an address that can be paired with a tunneling tool.

  5. Optional friends system

The friends system can be disabled in the mod settings for hosts who never use it.

Use cases

Playing with friends at home

A host opens a singleplayer world to friends who also run the mod, without renting a server.

Short sessions with others

A host creates a temporary address for a few clients who join within the 60 second window.

Who it’s for: Players who host singleplayer worlds for friends and want to avoid running a dedicated server or configuring port forwarding by hand. The mod is client-side only, so the host and friends who join need it installed, and the server is not involved.

Questions

Does a friend need World Host installed to join?

Yes. The friends system only works with friends who have the mod installed. Without it, the host can use /worldhost ip with a tunneling tool instead.

Why can ping increase when the friends system is not used?

The ip and tempip commands route traffic differently from the friends system, which can add latency. Turning off the friends system is an option for hosts who never use it.

Which loaders does World Host support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest Quilt file targets 1.20.4, while the latest Fabric, Forge and NeoForge files target 1.21.5, 1.20.1 and 1.21.5.

What the author says

Host your singleplayer worlds without having to run a server or setup port forwarding! In the future, we also plan to support Bedrock Edition clients through the use of Geyser. If your friend doesn't have the mod installed, you cannot use the friends system with them. However, you can run the command /worldhost ip to…
