Too Cheap!

by Sh4d0w

Too Cheap! lifts the 40-level cap that stops anvils from combining items once the cost climbs past that number, so enchanting and repairing gear no longer depends on a set order of book combinations.

What it does

Vanilla anvils refuse a combination when the cost reaches 40 levels and show the Too Expensive message. The mod swaps that fixed value for 2147483647, the largest value a Java integer can hold, so the limit effectively disappears. By default the cost of each anvil use and its scaling stay as they are in vanilla, and the change only takes effect once the player opts into the new settings.

The mod lets a player or server owner choose the highest cost an anvil accepts, how often an anvil takes damage, an optional cost cap and how fast costs rise with each use. A set of experimental options adjusts some internal values the author identified, though their exact effects are not confirmed. Settings are edited in the config file, or through a GUI when Mod Menu is installed as an optional dependency.

Too Cheap! is open source under the MIT License and requires Cloth Config API on Fabric and Quilt. It is published for 1.17 – 26.3, and the server needs it while players may skip it, so it works with a client that lacks the mod.

Key features

  1. Removed level limit

The 40-level ceiling is replaced with a very large value, so anvils keep accepting combinations past the vanilla threshold.

  2. Configurable maximum cost

The highest level cost an anvil will accept can be set to a value chosen by the player or server owner.

  3. Anvil damage chance

The probability that an anvil takes damage on use can be changed in the settings.

  4. Cost increase rate

The rate at which combination costs grow with each use is adjustable, and an optional cap can be applied.

  5. Experimental options

Additional settings change internal values the author tried to identify, with their exact effects left unconfirmed.

What the author says

Anvils only allow items to be combined if the cost is less than 40 levels. Otherwise, the Too Expensive! message is displayed. This leads to a complicated order of combining books to get the best gear before you can't add any more enchantments. This mod replaces the arbitrary value of 40 levels with 2147483647 (the…
