Third Person Death
by cintlex
When a player dies, Third Person Death switches the camera to third person and slowly zooms it out until the player respawns.
What it does
The mod changes only the death screen camera. Instead of staying in first person, the view pulls back behind the character and keeps widening until the respawn happens, which follows the death camera behaviour of Bedrock Edition while keeping the usual Java Edition button layout. Nothing else about the game is altered, and the mod is client-side only, so a server does not need it and players join without installing it.
Installation is simple: place the file in the mods folder and it runs without extra setup. Files are published for Fabric and NeoForge, with Fabric covering 1.20.1 and newer and NeoForge covering 1.21.2 and newer, so the matching build for the chosen loader and game version has to be picked. Builds cover 1.20.1 – 1.21.11 across 18 release versions, with the latest files at 1.1.0 for 1.21.11, both released on 2025-08-08. Snapshot builds are published as well. The mod is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and it is open source, with public source code and an issue tracker.
Key features
Third person death camera
When the player dies, the camera moves behind the character instead of staying in first person.
Gradual zoom out
The view widens slowly over the death screen until the player respawns, rather than snapping to a fixed distance.
Bedrock-style behaviour
The death camera follows the behaviour of Bedrock Edition, and the Java Edition button layout stays unchanged.
No effect on performance
The mod is lightweight and adds no measurable load to the game during play.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Players on Java Edition who want the death camera to pull back into third person, and anyone who plays on a server without needing it installed on the server side.
How it compares
Auto Third Person is client-side only, released under the MIT License and published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 26.3, so it covers more loaders and a wider range but changes the camera in general rather than only on death. Aerial3D is also client-side only and released under the MIT License, and it is open source, but it targets 1.21.10 on Fabric alone. Camera Command needs both the client and the server, has a single build for Fabric 1.21.1 and is released under All rights reserved.
