Switcheroo
by Nato Boram
With Switcheroo, a held tool or weapon is swapped automatically for the most suitable item in the hotbar when a block or mob is targeted.
What it does
Switcheroo watches what the player clicks and changes the held item before the action. Clicking a block picks the tool that breaks it fastest, and clicking a mob picks the item that deals the most damage per second. Holding Sneak blocks the switch, and holding Sprint makes the mod use the most effective item instead of the least effective one that still works.
The mod is client-side only, so a server does not need it and players join without installing anything on the server. Cloth Config API and Fabric API are required, and Mod Menu is optional for opening the settings screen. Switcheroo is published for Fabric only, with 18 release versions covering 1.16.5 – 1.21.7, and it is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, so it is open source. Snapshot builds are published as well.
Key features
Tool swap on block click
Switches the held item to the one most effective against the targeted block before breaking it.
Weapon swap on mob click
Switches to the item that deals the most damage per second against the targeted mob.
Sneak to hold the item
Holding Sneak prevents the switch from happening, so the current item stays in hand.
Sprint for maximum effect
Holding Sprint makes the mod use the most effective item, instead of the least effective one that still works.

Use cases
Mining with the right tool
A player breaking mixed blocks in a quarry does not have to change tools by hand between stone, wood and ore.
Fighting mixed crowds
Players facing several mobs can let the mod pick the item with the highest damage output against each target.
Who it’s for: Players who switch tools and weapons often in survival or on modded packs, and who want the choice made from the targeted block or mob rather than by hand.
How it compares
Effective Durability is client-side only, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and published for 1.20.4 – 1.20.6 on Fabric. Clicking is client and server, not open source, and covers 1.16 – 1.21.4 on Fabric. Auto Tool Switch is server-side only, not open source, and built for 1.21.10 on Fabric, so a server needs it while players do not.

What the author says
Switch your currently held item for an effective item when clicking on a block. Switcheroo will use the least effective tool that's still effective to break blocks and the most damaging item per seconds to attack entities.
