Sound Culling

by Fix85

Sound Culling lets a player block individual sound events in-game, so that spammy or unwanted noises from mobs, blocks or the UI are cancelled before they reach the sound engine.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 26.2

What it does

Blocking is set up from an in-game settings screen. The list is built at runtime from the sound events the game has registered, including those added by other mods, and each entry shows a localized name with its raw identifier underneath. A search filter matches on name or identifier, and a preview button plays a sound before the player decides whether to block it. Quick controls block or unblock every entry in the current search results with one click, and a master switch mutes all sounds without losing the per-sound settings.

Sounds marked as blocked are dropped at the point where they would be played, so the cost of the feature stays low. The mod changes only what players hear and does not touch resource pack volume sliders. It is a client-side Fabric mod, so the environment is client-side only and a server does not need it. Installation requires Fabric API, and the mod is published for Fabric only across 8 release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.2, under the MIT License as open source.

Key features

  1. Per-sound blocking

Individual sound events can be blocked from a list, leaving other sounds in the game untouched.

  2. Dynamic sound registry

The list is built from the sounds registered at runtime, so sounds added by other mods also appear.

  3. Localized names

Each sound shows a name in the selected language, with its raw identifier beneath it, such as English or Russian.

  4. Preview and search

A preview plays a sound before blocking it, and a search filter narrows the list by name or identifier.

  5. Bulk and master controls

One click blocks or unblocks every current search result, and a master switch mutes sound without erasing per-sound choices.

Questions

Does Sound Culling need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and the mod is published for Fabric only.

Does a server need Sound Culling installed?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Are blocked sounds removed from the game?

Blocked sounds are cancelled before they reach the sound engine, and the master switch mutes everything without erasing the per-sound settings.
