Audio Hotkeys

by TreSet

Audio Hotkeys lets players mute, unmute and change the volume of Minecraft sound categories with keyboard shortcuts while playing.

FabricClient-side onlyGNU General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.19 – 26.3

What it does

Each sound category can be bound to its own key, so muting music, adjusting weather or switching subtitles on and off takes one press instead of a trip through the options menu. Volume changes can step up or down by a set percentage, and the current level stays visible on screen. The mod only runs on the client, so a player can add it to a server without the server needing it.

A settings screen, opened with O by default or from Mod Menu when that is installed, lets players choose keys and step sizes without editing files. Feedback is kept small so the interface does not cover the game. The mod requires VanillaConfig, which stores its settings.

Audio Hotkeys is published for Fabric only, across 29 release versions 1.19 – 26.3, and is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only. Its latest Fabric file is 1.0.14+26.3, released 2026-09-15.

Key features

  1. Independent hotkeys per category

Each Minecraft sound category gets its own binding for muting, volume up and volume down.

  2. Percentage volume steps

Volume for a category rises or falls by a set percentage on each press.

  3. Subtitle toggle

A key switches subtitles on and off without opening the video settings.

  4. Settings screen

A screen opened with O collects every binding and step size in one place.

  5. Unobtrusive on-screen feedback

Short messages confirm a change so the player knows what was adjusted.

Who it’s for: Players who often change sound levels during a session, and anyone who wants per-category controls in a client-side Fabric setup.

How it compares

Full comparison

Audio Toggles is a Fabric mod for 1.21.10, client-side only, under the MIT License and open source. Configurable Mute On Focus Lost is also client-side, open source under the MIT License, and covers 1.21.4 – 1.21.11, so it targets a narrower set of versions. Toggleable Clouds is client-side, open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and covers 1.20.4 – 26.2, which concerns clouds rather than audio.

Questions

Does Audio Hotkeys need VanillaConfig?

Yes. VanillaConfig is a required dependency, so it must be installed with Audio Hotkeys.

Can Audio Hotkeys be used on a server?

Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy. Players install it on their own client, and the server does not need it.

Is Mod Menu needed to open the settings?

No. Mod Menu is optional; the settings screen opens with O by default, and Mod Menu only adds a way to reach it from its menu.
