Sound Awareness
by G10W5
Sound Awareness shows players where nearby sounds come from, drawing color-coded indicators on the HUD for hostile mobs, footsteps, blocks and other players.
What it does
The mod translates in-game audio into visual cues around the screen, so a player can see the direction of a sound before locating its source. Indicators are color coded: hostile sounds appear red, friendly sounds green, footsteps gray, block sounds yellow, other players white, and ambient sounds cyan. Sounds arriving from the same direction merge into a single indicator to limit clutter.
Each sound category can be switched on or off separately, and the overall indicator opacity can be set anywhere from 0% to 100%. Custom colors can be chosen per category, and a whitelist or blacklist filters specific sound events. Footsteps from supported modded sources are detected correctly, and the mod is compatible with Presence Footsteps.
The mod requires Architectury API and Cloth Config API. Fabric API and Mod Menu are optional; on Fabric, the settings screen opens from the Mods button in Mod Menu. Sound Awareness is client-side only, so servers do not need it, and it is released under the MIT License as open source. One universal JAR covers both Fabric and NeoForge, with builds for 1.21 – 26.2.
Key features
Directional sound indicators
Sounds are drawn as HUD markers that point toward their origin, so the direction is visible at a glance.
Color-coded categories
Hostile, friendly, footstep, block, player and ambient sounds each use a distinct color that can be changed.
Smart merging
Sounds arriving from the same direction share one indicator, which keeps busy scenes readable.
Category and event filters
Each sound category can be toggled, and a whitelist or blacklist limits which specific sound events are shown.
Adjustable opacity
The overall visibility of the indicators can be set from 0% to 100% in the settings.

How it compares
Sound Visualizer is client-side only and is MIT licensed, with Fabric, Forge and NeoForge files for 1.20.1 – 26.1.2. Health Indicator Simple is client-side only and not open source, released under All rights reserved for 1.21 – 26.3, and it shows health rather than sound. Floating Damage Indicators is open source under the MIT License and runs on client and server, but it displays damage numbers, not sound.
