Skull Graves

by KirilKom

When a player dies, Skull Graves leaves a floating skull that holds everything lost, and the skull can be opened to take the items back.

FabricNeoForgeClient and serverMIT License1.21.1 – 26.3

What it does

A grave is an entity placed in the world where the player died. Its items and experience stay inside it until they are collected, and graves are stored with the world, so they are kept through restarts and while their chunk is unloaded. Graves do not despawn, and a grave that falls into the void or lands in lava is handled so the items survive. Right-clicking a skull belonging to the player sends its items spiraling back one by one, and experience returns with them.

The mod takes the death drops from the grave and sets them in a floating skull instead of scattering them across the ground. The skull obeys physics: it falls, drifts and bobs at the surface, and it can be fished out of lava or knocked around by wind charges. Head loot can be dropped as well. Commands for managing graves work on graves in unloaded chunks, and an admin command called skullgraves is available to operators.

Skull Graves runs on Fabric and NeoForge and is published for 1.21.1 and 26.3. Both client and server need it, and it is released under the MIT License, though it is not open source. It works with mods compatible with Curios, which adds extra slots that the grave can hold.

Key features

  1. Floating skull grave

Everything lost on death is stored in a skull that floats in the world instead of spilling on the ground.

  2. Physical behaviour

The skull falls, drifts and bobs at the surface, and it can be recovered from lava or pushed by wind charges.

  3. Protected void and lava deaths

Items are protected when a death happens over the void or in lava, and graves settle at the bottom of the world.

  4. Retrieving items

Right-clicking a skull belonging to the player returns its items one at a time, and experience comes back as well.

  5. Admin command

The skullgraves command lets operators manage graves, and it works for graves in unloaded chunks.

Questions

Does Skull Graves need to be installed on the client?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which loaders does Skull Graves support?

Fabric and NeoForge. Builds for Fabric are published for 26.3 and builds for NeoForge for 1.21.1.

Do graves keep working after a server restart?

Yes. Graves live in world storage as entities, so they remain in the world and can be collected later, including when their chunk is unloaded.
