Simple Voice Distance

by awolfynight

Players who roleplay on a server can switch between three voice ranges, whisper, normal and shout, with a single key press in Simple Voice Distance.

What it does

Simple Voice Distance changes how far a player's voice carries in the proximity voice chat. Three modes are available: whisper for short private conversations, a default range for everyday chat, and a long shout for calling out to large gatherings. A medium setting covers calling out to nearby players. Players can step through the modes forward or backward with one key bind, and the distances themselves are set in the server configuration file, simplevoicedistance-server.toml, so server owners decide how far each mode reaches.

The mod is built for roleplay servers, where a whisper can stay between two characters and a shout can reach a crowd. It needs to be installed on the client and the server. Files target Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across seven release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.3, and the code is covered by All rights reserved, not an open source license. The issue tracker is the public place to report problems.

Key features

  1. Three voice modes

Whisper, normal and shout each carry speech over a different distance, and the server sets each range.

  2. Single-key switching

A key bind moves through the modes in either direction, so a speaker can change range without opening any menu.

  3. Server-side configuration

Range values are kept in a TOML file on the server, letting an admin tune the distances for the whole server.

  4. In-game range display

Colorful particles show the current voice range around the player, so the active mode is visible during play.

Questions

Does Simple Voice Distance need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. The range values are set in the server configuration file.

Which loaders does Simple Voice Distance support?

Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. The latest Fabric file is 1.6.1 for 26.3, the latest Forge file is 1.7.0 for 1.20.1, and the latest NeoForge file is 1.6.1 for 26.1.2.

Can a server change how far each voice mode reaches?

Yes. The distances for whisper, normal and shout are kept in simplevoicedistance-server.toml, so the server owner adjusts them there.
