Simple Smithing Overhaul

by pajic

Simple Smithing Overhaul changes how repair, enchantment sources and new smithing templates work in the vanilla smithing system, aimed at making the mechanic cheaper to use.

FabricNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21 – 26.3

What it does

The mod reworks smithing costs. A damaged item can be repaired with a smithing recipe that restores it to full durability while using the same amount of material the vanilla recipe would need, and a diamond pickaxe crafted with 3 diamonds needs only 3 diamonds instead of 4. Enchanted gear can be obtained through smithing, villager trades and loot rather than only through the enchanting table, so the enchanted item supply is faster and the enchanting level required for a result is higher in exchange.

Repairs apply to any repairable item in the game, and the mod adds new smithing templates alongside a rebalance of enchantment sources. Item descriptions are added for items the mod uses. The advancement progression is laid out in the vanilla style across 11 entries, and some entries stay hidden until discovered. Most aspects are configurable, and the description reflects default settings, so a player who dislikes a change can adjust it in the configuration screen.

Simple Smithing Overhaul is open source under the MIT License. It is published for Fabric and NeoForge, and requires Fabric API, Fzzy Config and mixson on both loaders. Mod Menu can open the in-game configuration on Fabric. Both the server and every player need the mod, since it runs on client and server.

Key features

  1. Cheaper smithing repairs

Repairs use the same material amount as vanilla but restore the item to full durability in one recipe.

  2. New smithing templates

New templates join the smithing system and rebalance where enchantments come from.

  3. Enchanted gear from more sources

Enchanted items can come from smithing, villager trades and loot, not only from the enchanting table.

  4. Progression in stages

An 11-entry progression follows the vanilla layout, and some entries stay hidden until discovered.

  5. Configurable behavior

Most features can be changed, and item descriptions help show what the mod does to each item.

What the author says

Smithing in Minecraft is incredibly stingy. The excessively high cost of managing gear deters players from ever interacting with the mechanic and steers them towards relying exclusively on Mending for item repair. This mod opens up new ways to upgrade and maintain your gear by improving the usability of vanilla…
