Simple Hats
by fonnymunkey
With Simple Hats installed, players wear cosmetic hats on a dedicated slot provided by Accessories, and the hats are defined through JSON files rather than code.
What it does
Hats are defined in JSON, so server owners and pack makers can add, remove or change them. The mod ships with almost 300 custom hats. Players obtain them from grab-bags that hostile mobs drop and from loot chests, and a grab-bag opens with a right-click. Duplicate or unwanted hats can be recycled into new or upgraded bags to get rarer ones.
Some hats come with alternate models or skins that a player switches between in the crafting grid, and some take dye like leather and can be washed clean in a cauldron. Hats can also be placed on a craftable hat-stand. A season system drops special grab-bags from ordinary bags at certain points in the calendar. Accessories and Cloth Config API are required, and the mod runs on the client and the server, so both need it. Builds exist for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.18.2 – 1.21.1, and the latest file for 1.20.1 is current as of 2026-02-09 on each loader.

Hat variants
Some hats offer alternate models or skins that can be switched in the crafting grid.
Dyeable hats
Some hats take dye like normal leather, and the color can be washed off in a cauldron.
Particle effects
Certain hats show particle effects that are visible in third person and to other players.
Seasonal grab-bags
At set points in the calendar, special grab-bags drop from ordinary bags.
