Scalable

by raderth

Scalable is a server-side Fabric mod that caps how much tick work the server does each tick, so a struggling server keeps responding.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.11 – 26.1.2

What it does

When a server tick starts, Scalable starts a timer and sets a time budget. Chunk ticking and entity ticking proceed as usual while the budget lasts. When the time budget is exhausted partway through a tick, leftover work is pushed to the following tick rather than stretching the current one beyond its limit. Under normal load everything ticks on schedule, and vanilla mechanics stay intact, so most players will not notice the mod.

Under heavy load the mod orders the work. Chunks are sorted, and those with priority such as loaded portals and ender pearls go first. Players always tick first, and other entities are assigned to the nearest player and ticked round-robin. Distant chunks and entities are the ones delayed, leaving the things closest to players responsive. Scalable needs Fabric API and runs only on the server, so players join without installing it.

Scalable is published for Fabric only, for four game versions: 1.21.11, 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2. The latest file is 2.0.2 for 26.1.2, a beta release from 2026-05-28. The code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Time-limited ticking

The mod sets a per-tick time limit and stops processing once it is reached, saving unfinished work for the next tick.

  2. Priority chunk queue

Chunks with loaded portals or ender pearls are processed first, and previously deferred chunks get priority over new ones.

  3. Players ticked first

Players are always ticked before other entities, so the world around them updates even on a heavily loaded server.

  4. Nearest-player assignment

Other entities are assigned to the nearest player and ticked round-robin, so distant entities wait while nearby ones stay active.

NovaStack Performance+ is a client-side only Fabric mod for 1.21.10 and is not open source, so it works on the player's side rather than the server. SBETO is a Fabric mod for 1.21.8 that is not open source and needs the server while the client is optional. Does It Tick? is a server-side Fabric, Forge and NeoForge mod for 1.20 – 1.21.1, open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, which makes it the broader option for older versions.

What the author says

A lightweight server-side optimization mod for Fabric that keeps your server running smoothly under load by intelligently budgeting work. Scalable naturally "scales" the server performance. It works great for large servers or a low budget.
