Satin API

by Ladysnake

Satin is a Fabric and Quilt library that lets modders add graphical effects by wrapping Minecraft's shader pipeline in a simpler interface.

FabricQuiltClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.18 – 1.21.4

What it does

The library targets the data-driven shader pipeline that Minecraft already runs for certain in-game effects. Satin wraps that system so a mod can apply its own shaders with less code, and it does not add any content of its own.

Satin is published for Fabric and Quilt, with builds covering 1.18 – 1.21.4 and snapshot builds also available. Only the client needs it, so servers run without it and players install it alone. It is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source code and issue tracker are public. Satin is required by 19 other mods, including EnvironmentZ, Motion Blur, ProjectJJK, Sync Re-Re-Ported and Orbital Railgun Enhanced.

Key features

  1. Simplified shader use

Modders can attach graphical effects to their mods without writing the full data-driven shader setup by hand.

  2. Built-in effect hooks

The library exposes the same shader system that vanilla uses for certain visual effects, so mods can reuse it.

  3. Full feature documentation

The main repository lists the full feature set and installation instructions for developers.

Use cases

Modder integration

A mod that needs custom post-processing effects can depend on Satin instead of building its own shader handling.

Who it’s for: Mod developers who want custom graphical effects on the client, and players who install mods that depend on Satin.

Questions

Does Satin need Fabric API?

No required dependency is listed for Fabric and Quilt.

Does Satin have to be installed on the server?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Is Satin a replacement for shader packs?

No. The author states that Satin is far less complex than shader packs, and that Canvas Renderer is a work-in-progress alternative.

What the author says

Satin is a simple library allowing modders to add interesting graphical effects to their mods. Its main feature is to significantly simplify the use of Minecraft's data-driven shader system (that is, the one used by super secret settings, mob vision, and spectral arrows). No. Optifine shaders are significantly more…
