Blabber
by Ladysnake
Blabber is a library for displaying interactive dialogues to players, defined through JSON files and triggered with a command.
What it does
Dialogues are written as data-driven JSON description files and loaded automatically from the data/[namespace]/blabber/dialogues directory. Each dialogue has a unique identifier. The files can be supplied by mods or by datapacks, and a separate online tool and a blabber dialogue editor help build them for players who prefer not to write code by hand.
The blabber command lets server operators and mapmakers start and manage dialogues. Its target argument must be a single entity, or a player's username, and when it is left out the player using the command is used. Its interlocutor, the entity a dialogue is played with, defaults when unspecified, and a command block can run the command automatically. A short video showcase is included with the project.
Blabber is client and server, so the server and every player need it. It is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. Files are published for Fabric and Quilt, with builds covering 1.20.1 – 26.1.2 across 15 release versions, and the latest file is 1.13.0 for 26.1.2, dated 2026-05-17.
Key features
Data-driven dialogues
Dialogues are described in JSON, so a map or modpack can ship its own without changing the Java code.
Blabber command
The blabber command starts dialogues, and its target and interlocutor fall back to sensible defaults when omitted.
Automatic loading
JSON files placed in the dialogues directory of a namespace are read on startup and listed by their identifiers.

Use cases
Quest dialogue
Heracles For Blabber is an add-on that connects Blabber dialogues to the Heracles quest mod, so quests can play dialogues in a modpack.
Dialogue with NPCs
Taterzens can be used to create NPCs that trigger Blabber dialogues when a player interacts with them.
Dialogue effects
Text Animator can add special effects to the text of dialogues.
Who it’s for: Mapmakers, modpack authors and server operators who want scripted conversations in a world. Players only see the dialogues the world provides.
