Rot Timer
by Kaster_64
Rot Timer adds a spoil timer to food in the inventory, so that edible items eventually decay into Rotten Flesh unless they are kept in barrels, chests or canned containers.
What it does
Each food item starts a spoil timer the moment it enters a player's inventory. The base spoil time is 48,000 ticks, about two in-game days. Biome temperature changes the rate of decay: cold biomes such as tundra and snow slow it considerably less than hot biomes such as desert and the Nether, which speed it up. Stacks of the same food share the timestamp of their oldest item, so the stack decays as one. Containers near a player are scanned automatically for spoilage, and no redstone or manual trigger is needed.
Storage changes the outcome. A barrel doubles the shelf life, a chest slows spoilage by a smaller factor, and canned food lasts five times longer. The mod is client and server, so the server and every player need it. It requires Fabric API and is released under the MIT License as open source. Files are published for Fabric and Forge, for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, with the latest Fabric build 1.0.1 for 1.21.1.
Key features
Spoil timer on food
A timer starts when food enters the inventory, and the item turns into Rotten Flesh once it expires.
Temperature-based decay
Biome temperature sets how quickly food decays, with cold biomes slowing it and hot biomes or the Nether speeding it up.
Storage multipliers
Barrels, chests and canned food each extend shelf life by a configurable factor, which rewards building a storage system.
Stack timestamps
Items of the same food in one stack share the oldest spoil timestamp, so the whole stack spoils together.
Automatic container scanning
Containers within a set radius of the player are checked at a set interval, with no redstone or manual trigger required.
