Private Horses

by somyk

Private Horses lets a tamed horse, donkey or mule be owned, shared and protected, and it adds a sneak-and-sugar control for owners.

FabricServer-side onlyMozilla Public License 2.0Open source1.21 – 1.21.11

What it does

Only the owner of a horse, donkey or mule can ride, leash, equip or interact with it by default, and the mod adds a sneak right-click with sugar to change who may use the animal. Owners can make a mount public, or share and reclaim access for specific players. The mod also lets an owner transfer a tamed animal to another player, which was inspired by the Transferable Pets mod.

A gamerule named private-horses.disable damage stops horses, donkeys and mules from taking damage, with the exceptions of fall damage and damage dealt by their owner, and it is turned off by default. The mod is published for Fabric only, across 8 release versions 1.21 – 1.21.11, and it is server-side only, so players join without installing it. It is released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 and is open source, with public source code.

Key features

  1. Owner-only interaction

Only the owner can ride, leash or interact with a tamed animal, which keeps random riders off a mount.

  2. Sneak and sugar access control

Sneak right-clicking an animal with sugar opens the sharing control, so owners can freely switch a mount between public and private.

  3. Damage prevention gamerule

A gamerule stops damage to horses, donkeys and mules, except fall damage and damage from the owner, for servers that want extra protection.

  4. Ownership transfer

An owner can give a tamed animal to another player, who becomes the new owner.

  5. Armor stays in inventory

Armor a player tries to equip on someone else's horse stays in the player's inventory, so a client-side display glitch does not leave a visual copy on the animal.
