TextFilter
by somyk
TextFilter removes or rewrites text on Fabric servers, covering signs, books, anvil renaming and chat messages through regex rules and find-and-replace pairs.
What it does
Server owners use TextFilter to screen player-written text. A blacklist regex strips characters or patterns, a whitelist regex keeps only the characters it allows, and a replacements list applies key-value find-and-replace after the regex passes. The filters cover signs, books, renamed items at the anvil and chat messages, which the mod changes on the server side.
Permissions are handled through the fabric-permissions-api, so servers can manage access with LuckPerms or a similar plugin. Bypass permissions exist per category and as a global bypass, letting trusted players write unfiltered text. Configuration can be reloaded in-game with a textfilter reload command, so rule changes do not need a restart.
It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join. Files target Fabric for 1.20.1 – 1.21.11 across 14 release versions, and the latest file is 1.0+1.21.10 for 1.21.11, dated 2026-07-23. The code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and public source code links are available.
Key features
Regex blacklist
A blacklist regex pattern removes the characters or sequences it matches from player-written text.
Regex whitelist
A whitelist regex pattern keeps only the characters it allows, discarding everything else in the message or text.
Find-and-replace rules
Key-value replacements substitute text after the regex filters have run, so one rule can rewrite a known word.
Chat and sign filtering
Chat messages, signs, books and anvil renaming all pass through the same filters, changed on the server.
Per-category bypass
Bypass permissions can be granted per filter category, or globally, for players who should write unfiltered text.
In-game config reload
The textfilter reload command applies edited rules without restarting the server.

How it compares
SkiesClear is server-side only, open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and published for Fabric 1.20.1 – 1.21.1, so it covers a narrower range of game versions than TextFilter. Custom Chat Alerts is client-side only under the MIT License, built for 1.21.11 alone, and it works on the player side rather than filtering text on the server. Anvil Too Expensive needs the server and optionally the client, is not open source, and is published for 1.19.2 – 1.21.5.
