Name Pain

by naqaden

Name Pain recolors player and mob nameplates on a scale that shifts from one color to another as the entity loses health, with opacity and colors set in a config screen.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.7.10 – 1.21.8

What it does

The mod changes how nameplates look in the client. Each nameplate takes one color at full health and another at minimum health, and values in between are blended. Colors and opacity are adjustable, so a nameplate can be recolored without any health-based change, or hidden by setting its alpha to 0. Tamed pets and nearby mobs that have been hit can show their names without the player looking straight at them, and villager names can be read from any angle.

Installation needs Cloth Config API and Fabric API on Fabric, and Cloth Config API alongside the loader on other platforms. Mod Menu is optional and gives access to the settings screen. Name Pain is client-side only, so servers ignore it. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, covering game versions 1.7.10 – 1.21.8 across 49 release versions. The code is not open source, and all rights are reserved by the author, naqaden. The project keeps an issue tracker for reports.

Key features

  1. Health-based nameplate colors

Each nameplate blends from a configured color at full health to another color at minimum health, which makes damage visible at a glance.

  2. Adjustable opacity

Opacity is set separately for the health states, and an alpha of 0 hides the nameplate entirely.

  3. Pets and hit mobs

Tamed pets and mobs that have been struck display their names when seen from a distance, without looking directly at them.

  4. Villager names from all angles

Villager nameplates stay readable from any direction, pairing with other name-related mods.

  5. Optional features

Every feature can be turned off, so the nameplate changes can be limited to cosmetic recoloring.
