KeepItSecret

by Jankat

KeepItSecret hides a player's or mob's nameplate when a block is between it and the viewer, so names do not show through walls.

NeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1 – 1.21.10

What it does

Nameplates of players and mobs can be partly or fully covered by blocks in the world, keeping a hidden pet or a concealed player from being revealed through a wall. The occlusion behavior is set by two gamerules, so server owners can turn it on for players, for mobs, or for both.

The mod runs only on the server, so players join without installing anything. Both gamerules default to false, which means the feature stays off until a server owner enables it with the gamerule command. Files are published for NeoForge on 1.21.1 and 1.21.10, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Partial nameplate occlusion

Blocks that stand between a viewer and a nameplate cover the name partially, not only as a full hide.

  2. Players and mobs

The occlusion applies to player nameplates and to mob nameplates, each controlled separately.

  3. Gamerule settings

Two gamerules switch the behavior for players and mobs, and both can be changed with commands while the server runs.

  4. Off by default

Both gamerules start as false, so nothing changes until an operator turns the feature on.

Use cases

Hidden pets

A pet placed behind a block no longer shows its nameplate through the wall, which keeps its position less obvious.

Concealed players

Players hiding behind terrain on a server keep their names out of sight when blocks are in the way.

Who it’s for: Server owners who run survival or roleplay servers and want nameplates to respect blocks in the world. Only the server needs the mod, so it suits networks where players should not have to install extra files.

How it compares

Full comparison

PlayerName Styler is server-side only, open source under the MIT License, and published for NeoForge on 1.21 – 1.21.11, so it changes name display rather than occlusion. Hidden Names is client and server, open source under the MIT License, and covers Fabric, Forge and NeoForge on 1.20.1 – 1.21.4, so both sides must install it. Global Gamerules (Neoforge) is server-side only, open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, and built for 1.21.1 alone, which makes it a broader tool for setting gamerules rather than a nameplate feature.

Questions

Does KeepItSecret need to be installed on clients?

Which loader does KeepItSecret support?

The mod is published for NeoForge only, with files for 1.21.1 and 1.21.10.

What the author says

A lightweight server-side mod that helps you "Keep It Secret" by stopping nameplates from showing through blocks. If you or your pet is hiding behind a block, their nameplates will be blocked by the block as well! You can easily configure this by using the gamerule commands if you want this feature enabled for…
