MoreMcmeta
by soir20
Players who want textures to change over time can use MoreMcmeta, which animates almost any texture through OptiFine.properties files or JSON.moremcmeta files.
What it does
MoreMcmeta reads animation definitions that resource pack authors place next to a texture, and plays the texture frames in order. Beyond the standard frame timing, it adds animation options such as synchronizing an animation with the time of day. The Animation Format Guide lists the supported textures and describes each parameter in detail.
The mod exists as a texture configuration API, so other mods and resource packs can rely on it for animated content. Installation needs no extra library on Fabric or Forge. MoreMcmeta runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it. It is published for Fabric and Forge across 15 release versions, 1.16.5 – 1.21.4, and the code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.
Seven catalog mods require MoreMcmeta, including Aether Addon: Emissivity, MoreMcmeta Emissive Textures and Warden Loot [Fabric]. Emissive texture support comes from a separate plugin, which is not part of the base mod.
Key features
Animated textures from JSON
Textures can be animated with a JSON.moremcmeta file placed beside the texture in a resource pack.
OptiFine format support
Animation definitions written as OptiFine.properties files also work, so existing packs can be reused.
Daytime synchronization
An animation option lets a texture advance in step with the time of day in the game.
Animation Format Guide
A guide lists the textures that can be animated and explains each supported parameter.

Use cases
Resource pack creators
Pack authors can animate block and item textures without editing the game's code.
Modpack builders
Modpacks that use animated resource packs can rely on one shared animation system.
Who it’s for: Resource pack authors who want animated textures beyond the standard frame options, and players who use animated packs and want them to render in the same way.
