Minecraft Mod Updater

by jonafanho

Minecraft Mod Updater keeps a Fabric client's mods folder current, fetching newer builds from Modrinth or CurseForge each time the game starts.

FabricClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.2 – 1.19.3

What it does

On launch, the updater checks the mods installed in the game folder and replaces any out-of-date jar with a newer build for the same game version. Required dependencies arrive with the mods that need them. Before anything is changed, existing mods are backed up.

The mod can also install a mod directly from a search, from a pasted URL, or from a local file. Builds placed in a mods-local folder are kept alongside the managed mods. Files in the mods folder that are not tracked are cleared on each run, so the folder matches what the updater expects.

The updater is built for Fabric and covers game versions 1.16.2 – 1.19.3 across 13 release versions. It is open source under the MIT License, and the source code and issue tracker are public. Either side can run it, and neither needs it.

Key features

  1. Automatic updates on launch

Mods are checked and refreshed each time the game starts, without a manual step.

  2. Dependency fetching

Required dependencies of an installed mod are fetched automatically along with it.

  3. Backups before changes

Existing mods are copied to a backup before the updater replaces or removes anything.

  4. Search, URL and local installs

Mods can be added by search, by pasting a URL, or from a local jar placed in the mods-local folder.

  5. Config file editing

The configuration file can be edited directly, which suits server hosts and modpack makers who follow the guide.

How it compares

Full comparison

FM Resource Pack Updater works on the client alone for 1.19.2 – 1.19.4, under a custom license that is not open source, so it updates resource packs rather than mods. Right Click Chest Boat is server-side only, built for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt 1.21 – 26.3, and is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.

Questions

Does Minecraft Mod Updater need any other mod to run?

No required dependency is listed for Fabric.

Can the updater manage a mod that is not on a catalog site?

Yes. A local jar placed in the mods-local folder is kept alongside the mods the updater manages.

Does the mod have to be on the server as well?

No. Either side can run it, so a server does not need the mod for players to use it.

In the catalog

Minecraft Mod Updater is one of 29,952 Game mechanics mods on ModsFinder, and one of 19,630 Game mechanics mods for Fabric. 7,205 mods support Minecraft 1.19.3.

What the author says

Start Minecraft normally and watch the mods automatically update! Required dependencies are automatically downloaded as well. The mods folder will be cleared on each run! If you want to add your own jar files, put them in the mods-local folder instead. To edit the config file directly or to host a server modpack, see…
