Magicraft

by lullaby

Magicraft introduces spells, scrolls, mana and grimoires to the game, letting a player learn a spell from a scroll and cast it from a book.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalGNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.21.11 – 26.3

What it does

A player learns a new spell by right-clicking a scroll, which permanently adds it to the grimoire. The grimoire opens a spell list where a spell is selected, and holding the grimoire and left-clicking then casts the chosen spell. Each spell consumes mana, and the default regeneration restores one mana point every five seconds, so the pool becomes the limit on how often spells can be cast.

Mana can also be restored faster. A mana potion, once crafted, instantly refills the entire mana pool, and mage armor, crafted at a smithing table, makes mana regenerate faster. Scrolls appear as loot from fishing and from the Wandering Trader, and they are rare by design, so each one is meant to feel like a valuable discovery.

The mod is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files for 26.3 released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later, so it is open source. Servers must run it for the spell system to work, while players can join without installing it. Source code is public, and the mod is also available as a data pack.

Key features

  1. Spell scrolls

Scrolls teach a single spell when used, and they stay in the player's grimoire once learned.

  2. Grimoire spell list

The grimoire lists learned spells, and a selected spell is cast by holding the book and left-clicking.

  3. Mana pool and potions

Each spell draws from a mana pool that regenerates over time, and a crafted potion refills it in one step.

  4. Mage armor

A smithing table recipe produces armor that speeds up mana regeneration for the player wearing it.
