Let Me Despawn

by frikinjay

Let Me Despawn lets mobs carrying gear or loot despawn naturally, which removes a common source of entity lag on servers.

What it does

In vanilla Minecraft, a mob that picks up or equips an item becomes persistent and never despawns on its own, so these mobs can accumulate over time. Let Me Despawn changes the despawn check so such mobs despawn like any other mob. Any items they carried are dropped when they despawn, so no items are lost.

Mobs listed in the configuration file keep the vanilla behavior and stay after picking up items. Commands update that list in real time, so no restart or manual reload is needed. Server-side only, it needs Almanac and Fabric API as required dependencies. Open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, it is published for 1.12.2 – 26.3, including snapshot builds.

Key features

  1. Natural despawn for equipped mobs

Mobs that carry or wear items can despawn under the normal rules instead of persisting indefinitely.

  2. Item drops on despawn

Carried and equipped items are dropped when the mob despawns, so players do not lose them.

  3. Configurable exclusion list

Specific mobs can be excluded so they keep the vanilla persistent behavior.

  4. Live updates

Changes to the mob list made with commands take effect immediately, without a restart.

  5. Reload command

The /almanac reload command reloads the configuration on the server.
