Inventory Particles

by LopyMine

With Inventory Particles installed, the items in a player's inventory can emit animated particles that are customized through data-driven configs and resource packs.

What it does

The mod adds many particle effects around inventory items. Each particle type can be tuned for physics such as acceleration, braking and impulses, for rotations both actual and visual, for sizes and colors with animations, for texture, for the items it spawns from, for the spawn area and for life time in ticks.

Items from other mods are handled by a built-in system that sorts them into item categories and varieties using config files. Based on those configs, it assigns particles, may recolor them and sets up spawn areas for each item. Since version 2.0.0 this happens without any setup from the player.

The mod runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it. It requires Fabric API and MossyLib, and it works with Inventory Interactions, Mod Menu, Particle Effects and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) as optional companions. It is distributed for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and the code is released under the Creative Commons Attribution No Derivatives 4.0 license, so the project is not open source.

Key features

  1. Physics controls

Particle acceleration, braking and impulses can each be set in the particle definition.

  2. Rotation and animation

Particles support both actual and visual rotation, with sizes, colors and textures that can animate over time.

  3. Item holders

A particle definition names the items it spawns from, so each item type can have its own look.

  4. Spawn areas and life time

Spawn areas can carry an extra texture, and each particle lasts a set number of ticks.

  5. Data-driven particles

New particles are added through resource packs and basic config files rather than code.

Use cases

Modded item coverage

Players with many content mods get particles for their items through the automatic category and variety system.

Custom inventory themes

Resource pack makers can build particle sets that match a modpack's style without changing the game code.

Who it’s for: The mod suits players who want a livelier inventory, and resource pack or modpack authors who want to design their own item particle sets. The official wiki describes how the configs are written.

Questions

Does Inventory Particles need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API and MossyLib are both required dependencies, so both must be installed next to the mod on Fabric.

Do servers need Inventory Particles installed?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

How are particles added for modded items?

Since version 2.0.0 the mod sorts items into categories and varieties using its config files, then assigns particles and spawn areas automatically.
