Hocon Resource Loader
by settingdust
Hocon Resource Loader lets resource and data packs ship HOCON files alongside the usual JSON, so a pack can change one value instead of replacing a whole file.
What it does
The mod loads any file in a pack whose name ends with .hocon and parses it with a HOCON parser, so HOCON content is read as game data the way a JSON file would be. HOCON adds syntax that JSON lacks, including variables and include statements that pull in another file, which cuts down repeated code in large packs. A .hocon file can include a JSON file and override only the values it needs, which is more convenient than a JsonPatch that edits the entire file. Because HOCON files are separate from JSON files, they do not conflict with packs that already use the JSON format.
Packs that use HOCON must enable the pack.mcmeta entry that the mod's documentation describes before the files take effect. Either side can run it, and neither side needs it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and Quilt, for the game versions 1.20 – 1.21, with 0.5.0 for 1.21 as the Fabric file and 0.4.0 for 1.20.1 on Forge and Quilt. The code is under the MIT License and is open source. Fabric Language Kotlin and Sinytra Connector are required dependencies.
Key features
HOCON resource files
Resource and data packs can ship .hocon files that the game reads in place of plain JSON content.
Includes and variables
HOCON include statements and variables let one pack reuse shared settings across many files.
Value-level overrides
A HOCON file can change a single value from an included JSON file rather than replacing the whole file.
Coexistence with JSON
Packs that keep JSON files keep working, since HOCON files are read alongside them without replacing them.
Compatibility

How it compares
Simple Resource Loader is a Fabric and Quilt mod that works on either side, and neither side needs it, covering 1.21 – 26.3 under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only. Paxi is open source under the same license, supports Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and covers 1.19.2 – 26.1.2. Hocon Resource Loader covers only Fabric, Forge and Quilt for 1.20 – 1.21 under the MIT License, and it reads HOCON files rather than loading extra packs.
