Preloading Tricks
by settingdust
Preloading Tricks is a developer library that runs code during the earliest stage of the mod loader, before ordinary mods are discovered.
What it does
The mod gives other developers early hooks into loader startup. It offers class transformation through Java instrumentation and callbacks driven by SPI, so a mod can extend the loader itself rather than wait for the game to start.
Preloading Tricks is aimed at developers, not players. Builds are tied to the loader rather than the game release, so they can be tested on several Minecraft versions. Fabric API is the required dependency on Fabric, and seven catalog mods, including KotlinLangForge and Registry Blocker, require it. Either side can run it, and neither needs it, and the code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.
Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 31 release versions, 1.16.5 – 26.1.2. The latest Fabric, Forge and NeoForge files are 3.7.3 for 26.1.2, and the latest Quilt file is 1.0.6 for 1.20.2.
Key features
Early loader entrypoint
A PreloadingEntrypoint, discovered through SPI, lets a mod run code during the earliest loader stage.
Preloading event callbacks
Callbacks registered through PreloadingTricksCallbacks fire at the early stages the mod exposes.
Early language adapter setup
A setup stage runs before the normal language adapter, so a mod can prepare its own adapter first.
Dynamic mod candidate paths
Extra candidate paths can be added before discovery, and the mod list can be read, added to or pruned through the ModManager API.

Use cases
Loader extensions
A developer who needs code to run before mod discovery can register a preloading entrypoint instead of patching the loader.
Bundled loader variants
A ForgeVariant entry in MANIFEST.MF restricts a mod to one loader variant, so LexForge and NeoForge builds can share one jar through jar-in-jar.
Who it’s for: Mod developers who work at the earliest point of Minecraft's loading process. Players have no reason to install it directly; it is needed only as a dependency of mods that use its hooks.

What the author says
Preloading Tricks is a developer-only mod that enables advanced operations during the very early stage of the mod loader. It provides early hooks, Java Instrumentation-based class transformation, and SPI-driven callbacks for loader extension. You can test on more versions since it depends on the loader version…
