For Whome The Bell Tolls

by Mechasphinx

For Whome The Bell Tolls is a Forge magic mod built around souls, with ten spells that draw on a soul-based power system.

ForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.20.1

What it does

Souls are gathered by killing mobs, and each mob drops one soul. A soul cannot be used directly; it has to be placed into a Soul Gem, which then channels the power for casting. The soul-based system is the core of the mod, and every spell draws on it in the same way.

A second power type works differently. Grasp spells rely on a Crystal Grasp Jewel rather than souls, and the grasp is built up over time. Players can let the grasp charge to its maximum, but letting it climb too high causes the player to wither away and die quickly. A corrupted heart meter stands in for the soul meter in this system, and spells that use it periodically consume corruption to counteract the buildup.

The mod requires Forge and runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. Files are published for 1.20.1 only, with 1.0.0 as the latest Forge file from 2025-04-09. The mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source. A wiki is linked from the project.

Key features

  1. Ten soul-based spells

Ten spells draw on collected souls, each with its own abilities and uses, so casting depends on which soul is stored.

  2. Soul Gem power channel

Souls from killed mobs must be placed in a Soul Gem before they can be channeled for magic.

  3. Grasp power type

Grasp spells draw on a Crystal Grasp Jewel and a corrupting heart meter, which adds a risk to strong casts.

  4. Three armor sets

Three armor sets are worn for different effects, and the Chaosteel set needs End-related materials in its recipe.

  5. In-game descriptions

Item and spell descriptions explain what each component does and how it is used.
