Food Overhaul
by TheRedBrain
Food Overhaul changes how food works: eating a food item grants a status effect, and the effect's strength and duration come from the item.
What it does
Instead of only filling the hunger bar and granting saturation, each food item applies a status effect when consumed. Effects can grant attribute modifiers such as more health, more stamina or resistance to frost, so players choose which food suits the situation. The mod supports two item types, consumables and potions, and reads the minecraft:consumable and minecraft:potion contents data components to decide how each one behaves. Food blocks interacted with also grant their status effect, but only when the player does not already have it.
A player can keep only a limited number of food status effects active at once. The ceiling on simultaneous food effects is read from the foodoverhaul:max_food_effects entity attribute, whose baseline comes from the server configuration file. When the limit is reached, no further food can be eaten until an effect runs out. A player who still has an effect can refresh it before it ends, and a food effect that has run out can be triggered again by consuming its item. The exact threshold is also configurable on the server.
Food Overhaul is open source under the MIT License and is published for 1.20.1, 1.21, 1.21.1, 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2 on Fabric. It needs Fabric API and Fzzy Config, and it runs on client and server. Two catalog mods, Food Overhaul - Vanilla Foods and Food Overhaul - Farmer's Delight, require it.
Key features
Effect-based eating
Each food item applies a status effect with attribute modifiers, replacing a plain hunger and saturation boost.
Effect limit per player
A configurable attribute caps how many food effects can be active, and refreshing an effect before it ends is allowed.
Data-driven item setup
Default effects for items can be set through data packs, and the mod also adds an effect removal tag for consume effects.
Add-on API
A simple Java API lets add-on mods create food blocks that grant effects, and players can use their own food effects.

What the author says
This is an overhaul of the food system. Eating food no longer fills the hunger bar or gives saturation. Each food item now grants a corresponding status effect instead. These effects can grant attribute modifiers like increased health, more stamina or resistance against frost damage. This gives players a real choice…
