Falling Leaves (NeoForge/Forge)
by cheaterpaul
With Falling Leaves installed, leaf blocks in the world shed small falling particles as players walk past them, adding a light seasonal touch to forests.
What it does
Falling Leaves draws leaf particles that drift down from leaf blocks. Which leaf types drop leaves, how often they drop, and how far below a block there must be free space for a leaf to appear are all set in the client config file, fallingleaves-client.toml. Leaves from conifer trees can use a separate spawn rate.
The particles are purely visual, so the mod changes nothing about gameplay. Wind can push the particles sideways, and a list of dimension types can be set to have no wind at all. A season fall rate setting accepts a list of modifiers, so leaves can fall faster or slower depending on the season.
Forge and NeoForge are both supported, and the mod runs on the client only, so a server does not need it. Files exist for Forge across 24 game versions, 1.16.3 – 26.1.2, and the code is under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, making the project open source.
Key features
Leaf particle effect
Leaf blocks release falling particles that can be sized and given a lifespan in the config.
Spawn rate control
The amount of leaves spawning overall and from conifer trees can be set separately.
Wind handling
Wind can be disabled for the particles, or turned off for a chosen list of dimension types.
Player-placed blocks
An option decides whether leaf blocks the player placed also drop leaves.

Use cases
Forest scenes
Players who build or explore wooded areas can add falling leaves to make the landscape feel more alive.
Season-aware worlds
Modpacks that add a season system can tie the leaf fall rate to the active season through the config.
Who it’s for: Players who want visual leaf particles on their own client. Server owners do not need to install anything for it to work.
How it compares
Falling Leaves (Backport) targets only 1.12.2 on Forge, and is also client-side only and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only. Leaf Litter is built for Forge and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 1.21.1, runs on client and server, and is not open source. Leaf Me Be! is server-side only and covers 1.20.1 – 26.1 on Forge and NeoForge, under All rights reserved.
