Existence
by CipherXOR
Existence is a multiplayer social horror mod in which players stay invisible to each other by default, and only sound gives a player away.
What it does
Players cannot see one another unless a stress-driven mechanic says otherwise, so each person has to rely on voice chat and footsteps to tell who is nearby. Darkness, isolation and eerie encounters raise a stress value; at high stress the view blurs, fog thickens and psychological whispers begin. Entities called mimic ghosts copy other players' skins, names and even recorded voice snippets, so a friend's voice may no longer belong to a friend.
Existence integrates with Simple Voice Chat, and the mimic ghosts need that integration to play back recorded voices. Architectury API, Fabric API and Simple Voice Chat are all required. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. The code is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source and issue tracker are public. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.20.1, with 1.20 also listed among the game versions that have files.
Key features
Default invisibility
Players are completely invisible to one another by default, so contact depends on sound alone.
Stress system
Darkness, isolation and frightening encounters build stress, which warps vision, thickens fog and triggers whispers.
Mimic ghosts
Entities copy other players' skins, names and voice snippets, stalk them and extinguish light sources.
Voices that mislead
A friend's voice may come from behind a wall, so players must decide whether to trust what they hear.
Monsters and trust
The mod is built around the question of which players can be trusted, with ghosts that wear friends' faces and hunt the group.

Footsteps echo from the cave behind you. A pickaxe breaks stone somewhere to your left. Whispers, just at the edge of…
