Don't Punch Trees
by TNT_Blox_0
Don't Punch Trees removes the option to gather wood with bare hands, so players must get sticks and leaves and craft planks instead.
What it does
Breaking logs with an empty hand no longer yields wood. Players collect sticks and leaves, then craft four sticks into a 2x2 pattern to receive two oak planks. Logs, planks, stairs, slabs and other wood blocks require an axe, and bamboo requires a sword. Functional blocks such as crafting tables, chests and barrels are included in the rules.
The mod is a datapack built on vanilla Minecraft, so it changes no code and works with any loader choice. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, across 10 release versions, 1.20 – 1.21.4. A server running it enforces the rules, and players may leave it out, because only the server needs it. The code is under the MIT License, but the project is not open source.
Key features
Hand-gathering removed
Punching a tree no longer drops wood, which pushes early progression toward sticks, leaves and tools.
Axe and sword requirements
Wooden blocks drop items only when broken with an axe, and bamboo is harvested with a sword.
Sticks to planks recipe
Four sticks in a 2x2 pattern yield two oak planks, so a crafting table and wooden axe come early.
Extensible axe tag
Modded wood types can be added by putting axes into the minecraft:axes item tag, using a custom datapack.

Use cases
Survival progression
Servers that want early game to rely on tools and crafting instead of fist harvesting can use the rule set as is.
Modded wood types
Mod makers who add new wood types can write a small datapack that extends the loot tables to cover them.
Who it’s for: Server owners who want a more demanding early game built on vanilla mechanics, and players who join such servers and need no extra install.
How it compares
Wood is Wood is a Fabric-only server-side mod for 1.21 – 1.21.11 under the MIT License and is open source, so it works on servers without client installs. No Tree Punch runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.19.2 – 1.21.1 and is client and server, so every player must install it. Unbeaten tree is NeoForge-only for 1.21.1 and also needs both sides.

What the author says
Being able to punch a tree and harvest wood with your fists is unrealistic and undermines the survival aspect of the game. Plenty of mods have been made to solve this problem, but Don't Punch Trees takes a simpler and more vanilla friendly approach. Matter of fact, DPT is a datapack, which means you can use it in…
