Datapack Portals

by kyrptonaught

Datapack Portals lets a server owner define custom portals in a datapack, each with its own frame block, ignition item and destination dimension.

FabricServer required, client optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.3 – 1.21.1

What it does

Custom portals are declared in JSON files inside a portals folder of a datapack. Each file sets the frame block, the ignition method (a block, item or fluid, or fire on a supported block), the color of the portal and the dimension it leads to. The travel target can be any dimension ID, and a separate return location can be set so players come back somewhere other than the overworld. A limit can be placed on how many portals may be built from the same frame.

The mod builds on CustomPortalApi and behaves like a vanilla Nether portal: the frame is lit the same way, and the portal teleports the player on contact. An example file ships with the mod and some optional arguments are available for finer control. Server owners install it, and players can join with or without it. It is released under the MIT License and is open source, and it is published for Fabric only across 14 game versions, 1.16.3 – 1.21.1.

Installation requires Fabric. The latest Fabric file, 1.2.3-1.21 for 1.21.1, was published on 2024-09-13. CreateDPCompat requires Datapack Portals, so it is the one other catalog mod that depends on it.

Key features

  1. Datapack-defined portals

Portals are created by adding files to a datapack, so no Java code is needed for each new portal.

  2. Varied ignition

A portal can be lit with a block, an item or a fluid, or with fire on a supported block.

  3. Custom destinations

Each portal can send players to any dimension ID and can specify a separate return location.

  4. Frame and color settings

The frame block, the portal color as three numeric values and a limit on duplicate frames are all set per portal.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners and pack makers who want portals to other dimensions defined through datapacks. Players on a server that runs the mod need nothing extra.

How it compares

Full comparison

Custom Portals is a client and server mod under the MIT License, open source, and published for Fabric across 1.16 – 26.2. Relative End Portals: Immersive Portals Edition is open source only in the sense that its license is listed as MIT, but it is not open source here; it works on the server while clients may skip it, and it covers 1.19 – 1.21. Portable Nether Portal is client and server, under the MIT License, and only targets 1.20.6.

Which loader does Datapack Portals support?

Only Fabric. Fabric API is not listed as a separate requirement for this mod.

Can a portal lead to a dimension added by another mod?

Yes, if the dimension ID is given in the portal's JSON file, the portal can send players to it.

What the author says

Inside your datapack create a "portals" folder, this is where you'll put all your custom portals. There is no set limit of allowed portals, as long as there aren't any duplicate frame blocks. { "block": "minecraft:stone", "dim": "minecraft:the_end", "r": 66, "g": 135, "b": 245 }
